Packing light for a French city break

What to bring, what to leave, and how to move around French cities with less to carry.

· Updated · 3 min read

French city centres are full of cobbles, stairs and narrow pavements. A lighter bag makes every part of the trip easier.

Build around one bag

  • Pick colours that mix, so fewer items go further.
  • Wear your bulkiest shoes and jacket on the journey.
  • Use a small day bag for essentials so you can store the rest.

Weather and walking

Comfortable shoes beat almost any outfit choice. Check the forecast for the days you travel, and carry a compact layer instead of a bulky coat.

When you still have a big suitcase

Check-out and check-in times rarely match train times. Storing your suitcase for a few hours lets you walk, eat and see the city without it.

Remember to keep documents, money and medication in your day bag.
